The trend to go green is happening throughout the state and the nation - in people's homes, schools and also in many businesses. With that popular trend, many employers are finding the need for people who know the science behind sustainability and can apply their knowledge in the workplace.
Sustainable Business Degrees Have Staying Power
Where a traditional curriculum teaches business students the importance of the bottom line, sustainable programs focus on the "triple bottom line." Dean David Schejbal of the University of Wisconsin-Extension says students are taught that profits, people, and the planet are inseparable, and they'll learn to improve margins while reducing costs associated with global warming, energy, water, and negative social impacts.

More green degrees in Wisconsin
Profiting while protecting the earth, that’s what a new degree program offered through UW-Extension teaches. The Dean of Continuing Education, Outreach and E- Learning says the B.S in Sustainable Management encompasses business systems, social systems and natural systems. David Schejbal says learning how those three areas interact is key for the curriculum. Students can expect to learn about carbon trading, reducing water use to increase bottom line, in addition to creating close ties with the community to have a productive workforce.

Putting the planet on the same plane as profits, UW-Extension is starting a first-of-its kind, online sustainable management program at four University of Wisconsin System campuses this fall.
Universities hope to help reduce waste, increase workforce
A forum regarding the rise of green jobs is slated to take place at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Monday.
The event is following a similar forum held in Madison this past Friday, which was sponsored jointly by the Wisconsin School of Business, the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Counsel and the Law Firm of Godfrey and Kahn.

A Collar of a Different Color
UW-Stout is even giving people a start in the green economy with their new sustainable management major. The major is geared toward those with their associate’s degree and can be done online and through other schools in the UW System. People with the degree will take classes in logistics, sustainable accounting, biology, environmental impact, and water and energy.
