The Effect of Water Reduction in an Animal Feed Manufacturing Process

Student Testimonial

The Capstone project is a great experience. I feel that this was a great way to bring my professional career into my student career. I call it a career as I have been going to school for about ten years now. I didn’t have any difficulties from a professional aspect. The capstone proposed was an idea that was being thrown around for a long time. The Idea came to life when I needed a capstone project.

My biggest learning from this capstone is the importance of project management skills. This is exactly what project management is. The proposed timeline was built. It was followed to the best of my ability. As we know, things come up. Priorities get changed. We delt with Covid-19 issues that made some things difficult.

The interviews were interesting. The interview with Scott went as expected. The interviews with Jamie and Sean went a little differently than what I had expected. The interview with Scott went as planned because we had talk so much about the trial and what that process would look like. We understood the technical side of the trial. We had already discussed at length what we assumed as potential outcomes.

The interviews with Jamie and Sean were interesting. It was interesting to see how they were looking at things from their perspectives. They were looking at things through their lenses. What I liked was that we were all on the same page as to the reason for the need of a trial/water reduction/solids increase. We were aligned with needing to increase production in order to meet the higher demands.

I would say that my focus point of my capstone changed towards the end. My proposed trial/project morphed into an actual trial. The questions I was asking in the beginning were answered. The hypothesis would now become a reality. I would not have changed the capstone project as I feel it was the perfect format for a capstone. I would only have liked for the way that the proposed trial was be presented would not have changed.

All of the SMGT programs have been successful in getting me prepared for this capstone. If a had to think of one course that helped the most, it would be SMGT 230: Triple Bottom Line Accounting for Managers. This course is amazing. It opens up the students mind to the other side of the coin. In this case, it lets you see that sustainability is sitting on a tripod. All there legs are very important. We cannot have sustainability with one of the legs missing.

I fell that the course taught a valuable lesson. The lesson being that either in your personal life or your professional one, that we need to think about things from a triple bottom line perspective. It puts into perspective that we need to live life this way. When we act, when we do, when we make decisions, we need to think about its impact on People, Profit, and Planet.

The way that Dr. Kozak formatted this capstone course is amazing. In all of my course work throughout my ten years of studies, she will be in my top five of professors. She made it very easy to do a semester long project. Communication is always key in project management. Dr. Kozak made sure that communication was always there. Review, and comment of assignments was always quick. I especially liked the personal phone calls to check in on her students.

To future seniors, put down your phone and listen to me. I will keep this very simple. You have made it to the end. The light at the end of the tunnel is bright. You have worked so hard up to this point. I have three simple things to say about you and your upcoming capstone.

1. Just think of it as a long report or project that you turn in at the end of the semester. Don’t let the idea of it being some giant project get in your head. It will evolve. It will develop. Trust Dr. Kozaks plan because it works.

2. You must keep moving on this capstone. Before you know it, the course will be over. Weather it be Fall or Spring, things will come up. Keep pushing forward. Set up a couple of days a week that you are going to dedicate time to your capstone.

3. In the great words of Aaron Rodgers, R.E.L.A.X. Its your senior year. The capstone is taking everything you have learned throughout the SMGT program and using those aspects for your Capstone. Have fun, enjoy some weekends. Work hard, study hard, and play just as hard.

The purpose of this project is to reduce water in the rinsing of ingredient tankers. The water reduction trial should help with production throughout.
